1st place

1st prize: Luxembourg - @RealTime WW1

@RealTime WW1 is a project by students on the Master's programme in European Contemporary History at the University of Luxembourg. Since the beginning of 2014, they have been posting brief accounts of life during the First World War on the Twitter account @RealTimeWW1, ‘not as a story of winners and losers, but as a time when many mothers felt the same fear for their sons in military hospitals, regardless of their nationality. In which men on all fronts write similar love letters without knowing whether they will ever see the addressee again. In which soldiers sing the same Christmas carols across the trenches and pray the same Lord's Prayer – only in different languages.’ The students break down the grand narrative of the First World War into small personal stories, making it comprehensible today. By sharing a few sentences each day, they open up a new perspective on today's political and social priorities – through the eyes of soldiers, nurses, students, artists, farmers and activists, all equally hopeful that the war will soon be over for them. @RealTime WW1 now has more than 8,700 readers.

2nd place

2nd prize: France – Fronterras – European (border)line project

The Fronterras – European (border)line project began with 28 young Europeans, four of whom live on the external border of the European Union. They created a website featuring compelling stories about life on Europe's borders and journeys across them. According to the team, ‘the abstract concept of “borders” becomes real through the eyes of those who live with them every day. We want to bring people closer to Europe through the borders that were drawn arbitrarily a long time ago and which today make up the many facets of Europe.’
