Text of the Certificate of Honour

On Ascension Day, 11 May 1961, in the Coronation Hall of the City Hall of Aachen, the former imperial palace, the International Charlemagne Prize for the year 1961 was awarded to Professor Dr. Walter Hallstein, President of the European Economic Community, in recognition of his tireless, purposeful work for the European Federation, based on a profound knowledge of the problems. In the new field of close political and economic co-operation between the nations of Europe, firm foundations have been laid which will pave the way for a later pan-European concept.
