Text of the Certificate of Honour

On Ascension Day, 28 May 1981, in the Coronation Hall of Aachen's Town Hall, the former imperial palace, the International Charlemagne Prize for 1981 was awarded to the President of the European Parliament, Simone Veil, in honour of her work for the unification of Europe and her resolute advocacy of the rights of the first freely and directly elected representation of all the peoples of Europe united in the European Community.
