On Ascension Day, 11 May 1972, in the Coronation Hall of Aachen City Hall, the former imperial palace, the International Charlemagne Prize of the City of Aachen was awarded to The Rt. Hon. Roy Jenkins P.C.M.P. in appreciation of his determined advocacy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain's membership of the European Community, in the confidence that he places in the economic future and social well-being of his country and of all European states.
