On Ascension Day, 8 May 1997, in the Coronation Hall of the City Hall, the former Imperial Palace, the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen was awarded to the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Professor Dr. Roman Herzog, in honour of his tireless efforts to promote understanding and peace in Europe.
