Text of the Certificate of Honour

On Ascension Day, 18 May 1950, Dr. phil. Richard Nikolaus Graf Coudenhove-Kalergi was presented with the 1950 International Charlemagne Prize of the City of Aachen in the Coronation Hall of the Town Hall, the former imperial palace, in recognition of his life's work in shaping the United States of Europe. The city of Aachen, once the centre of the Carolingian Empire stretching from the Pyrenees to the Slavic language border, tirelessly active as a border city in the task of overcoming these borders by building intellectual bridges, could not have found a more worthy recipient for the first-ever presentation of its highest award.
