Text of the Certificate of Honour

On Ascension Day, 27 May 1976, in the Coronation Hall of the Town Hall, the former Imperial Palace in Aachen, the 1976 International Charlemagne Prize was awarded to the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium, Leo Tindemans, the European, whose unstinting commitment to the unity of Europe is reflected in his forward-looking report on the desired European Union, written in 1975. It charts the course that can lead us to this goal, far removed from national self-interest, and secure our liberal future.
