George C. Marshall konnte den Preis nicht in Aachen entgegennehmen. Stellvertretend für ihn nahm seine Frau Catherine die Auszeichnung - Karlspreisurkunde und eine Sonderausführung als Plakette - am 4. Mai 1959 in einem Washingtoner Krankenhaus entgegen.

Text of the Certificate of Honour

The International Charlemagne Prize was awarded to General George C. Marshall, the former US Secretary of State and Secretary of Defence, for his outstanding services to the economic reconstruction of Europe through the Marshall Plan, the strengthening of the idea of unification and the will of the peoples of Western Europe to preserve themselves. This certificate was issued on the basis of the unanimous decision of the Board of Directors of the International Charlemagne Prize on 29 October 1958.
