Text of the Certificate of Honour

On Ascension Day, 31 May 1973, in the Coronation Hall of the Aachen City Hall, the former imperial palace, the International Charlemagne Prize of the City of Aachen was awarded to Don Salvador de Madariaga in honour of his life and work, his courageous criticism and forward-looking ideas, for a European unity whose strength is based on freedom and independence, on political and social responsibility towards the world and spiritual radiation from a variety of rich sources.
