Mai 1998, wurde im Krönungssaal des Rathauses, der ehemaligen Kaiserpfalz, der Internationale Karlspreis zu Aachen an den Außenminister der Republik Polen, Herrn Professor Dr. Bronislaw Geremek, verliehen in Würdigung mutigen und unerschrockenen Einsatzes als Wissenschaftler, Politiker und Staatsmann für die Einheit Europas.
